"We had dinner at the Long Wharf Marriott Christmas Eve and spent Christmas
day in Chinatown which made us feel we had gone out of the country. The
harbor views are breathtaking despite the construction below. When you
stay there, it is like staying in a ‘part of history’. If you can ever
try it out, do so. Everyone was cheerful even though they were working
on the holiday. Walking around Fanueil Hall when it was deserted Christmas
eve, was just beautiful. Staying there was all I hoped it would be. If
you love the city, you will love the Custom House."
Brewster
"It is a very large area with outdoor and indoor pools, lots of planned activities in the summer, even ponds, walking or biking (the Cape Cod Bike Path runs through the property and into a large park on its way out to the outer part of the cape.) It is across the street and up the road from the ocean. Also, just up the road is a day camp where your kids can do everything from wind surfing to crafts, etc., if they have the time. Most kids meet around the pools or at one of the evening activities. It's worth checking out."
"Tourist thing to do :
Cape Cod rail trail
Brewster Green is located at a mid point on the trail. Total length
is 25.6 miles. Running along the PA Central Railroad right-of-way it winds
through Dennis, Harwich, Brewster, Orleans, Eastham and Wellfleet. The
eastern end of the trail runs through the National Seashore.
Chatham
Main Street is great for shopping. If you have a limited amount of
time, a cross section of Cape Cod retail can be found here.
Rock Harbor
Great for sunset watching. Whale watching The Dolphin fleet in Provincetown
is the oldest and came highly recommended. We saw whales within a stone’s
throw of Race Point lighthouse."
"For Restaurants the Tiki Port if you like Chinese is right across from the Cape Cod Mall. There are several Hearth and Kettle Restaurants within a short drive. There are two Sheridan’s Restaurants with homestyle cooking. One is somewhere near Yarmouth and the other is past the Cape Cod mall as if you are heading home on your right about 2 or 3 miles past the Tiki Port. There are also several Bobby Byrnes Pubs around. We like the one near New Seabury. "
"Brewster is in a quiet section of the Cape but it is easy to get around
the many sites on the cape. If you travel down cape you are only a 30 minute
drive to Provincetown on the tip of the cape, or if you want to travel
to Martha's Vineyard or Nantucket you are only 20 - 30 minutes to the boat
lines to take you there."
Cape Cod
"I thoroughly enjoyed Cape Cod. It's very beautiful, and the towns are charming. The dunes at the National Seashore are stunning. My son and I visited Wellfleet, Provincetown, and went on a whale watch with the Dolphin Line. We saw lots of whales--humpbacks, finbacks, and minkes--but the trip was pretty rough. The naturalist on board seemed very knowledgeable and was quite enthusiastic. The Sandcastle has discount coupons good for $3 off each ticket--you have to ask at the desk. The libraries in Wellfleet and P'town are very good and have excellent children's sections. I was able to check my e-mail at the Wellfleet Library, and I believe the P'town Library also has Internet access. If you're staying two weeks or more in the area you can get your own library card which can be used at all the Cape Cod libraries.
We only ate out twice. We had lunch in Wellfleet at the Lighthouse,
and after the whale watch we ate at Mojo's, right by the wharf. The
food was fine, nothing special. Parking in P'town is difficult.
High season must be a nightmare. When we went on the whale watch
I parked at a lot several blocks from McMillan Wharf that was up a small
hill. It was an easy walk to the wharf, and it only cost $3 for the
day. Unfortunately during the low season most of the art galleries
are only open on the weekends, so I didn't get to visit all the galleries
I had planned to. Of the beaches we saw, I liked Marconi the best.
I was sorry when we had to leave and would love to spend more time at Cape
Cod."
Hancock
"There is much to do in the area. The terrific Hancock Shaker Village is nearby. We attended an evening event there that included a tour, a Shaker meal and music. We toured the Edith Wharton House, the Norman Rockwell Museum, The Clark Institute (Impressionist paintings), and saw theatrical productions in nearby Williamstown and Stockbridge. Stars I have seen in productions there the last few years (one of my favorite vacation areas) have been Joanne Woodward, Blythe Danner, Gweyneth Paltrow, Judge Reinhold, F. Murray Abraham, and Michael Learned.
The music at Tanglewood is wonderful as is the view. Try the Dance Festival at Jacob's Pillow. Food in the area is very good. They have everything from a brew pub to New England Colonial Taverns. Try the Pizza at Over the Rainbow in Pittsfield.
We took a canoe trip on the Housatonic arranged by a local outfitter
and the hiking in the area is excellent with the Appalachian Trail and
Mt. Graylock a short drive away. We spent 2 days touring Vermont. Antiques
and outlets galore.. We toured Hildene (on America's castles) and saw the
Grandma Moses collection a the Bennington Museum."
Hyannis
"The Yarmouth House (W. Yarmouth) was fine dining, with coupons available
in the guide books. The Hearth'n'Kettle (various locations) was the best
value, with large portions and great bread. The Lobster Boat (W. Yarmouth)
was not a good value and left us looking for something else to eat. Go
only if you plan on ice-cream later. Woody's (Hyannis) had excellent sea
food pasta dishes and was reasonable. Baxter's (Hyannis) was over-priced
for a "take-out style" place, but good. I'd recommend going there to sit
dockside and have a drink. Sam's Seafood (various locations) had good fish
but the fried shrimp was sushi style, I hope by accident. While we did
not eat there, the Hyannisport Brewing Company (Hyannis) had an American
menu and a good beer sampler (try the cranberry beer - no, really, it's
not bad). "
Mashpee
"We found that to go anywhere on the Cape was a long drive, approximately
25 minutes. This was for meals, miniature golf, etc. The beaches were close,
and they were beautiful. In the summer, however, with all the traffic,
it just took too long to get anywhere. We did a day trip to Boston (approximately
90 min) which the family loved and also to Plymouth (about 40 min) which
was very interesting also. While this exchange was to a very nice resort,
I would not go back during the summer unless I planned to spend a lot of
time at the resort. "
