"Helen , Georgia. This is the Alpine village in which you can easily spend one full day looking around and shopping. Many restaurants are there. All are reasonably priced casual dining. Down the street in Helen there is an outlet mall also. Many waterfalls are located within half hour drive. Must hike to most after parking. You can spend a couple hours shallow water tubing down the Chattahoochee River through Helen."
"Great fun for family. Expect cold water. Brasstown Bald (highest mountain in Ga) is thirty minutes away. It has a nice museum and film at the top explaining early timbering in the area. After parking you can hike to the top or take a shuttle (small fee). In general, all hikes in the region require good health. Expect to expend some effort for twenty to thirty minutes on these hikes. No problem for kids of course. Drive approx. 45 minutes to Dahlonega Ga where the first gold rush took place just prior to the Cal. gold rush. Nice museum there, nearby gold mines to tour and pan for gold. The town itself is quite nice for its shops. We also drove to Tallulah Gorge (deepest canyon east of Mississippi) but we were no too impressed. The drive was about an hour and a half. Babyland (Home of the Cabbage Patch Kids) is in Cleveland. Kids like it. Although we didn't go, there is great white water rafting in nearby. North Carolina about two hours away."
"Don't miss the Tanglewood Restaurant near Helen on Hwy 356 one mile east of Unicoi State Park."
"It is isolated, but there are many things to do within a reasonable drive: Helen, GA (Bavarian-style village); Atlanta (Joel Chandler Harris home, Atlanta History Center, botanical gardens); Marietta (lots of antique shops in quaint downtown area). Contrary to some reviews, shopping is not that distant. Carrollton is more than adequate, and a large supermarket is available just north of the #5 exit off I-20."
"We were very surprised to find that there are lots of shops and restaurants within about 6 miles of the Plantation. Day trips to Six Flags and Stone Mountain are well worth the effort. We also enjoyed a Sunday trip to Atlanta - Centennial Park, Underground Atlanta, Martin Luther King site, Carter Presidential Centre etc. A more local attraction is the John Tanner State park."
"If you have small kids or even if you don't go to Bayland General Hospital where you can see a cabbage patch kid being born. Try to coincide your visit with Dahlonaga Gold Rush Days, a huge and I mean huge craft show. You must eat at the Smith House, sit down family style pass it around cooking. Unless you like the outdoors there is not a whole lot to do, but I loved the area."
"Cleveland, Ga. is close by and is the home to the Cabbage Patch dolls. You can tour The "hospital" and see cabbage patch kids being "born" in the cabbage patch. My daughters loved it! There is a pottery place called Mark of the Potter that is worth seeing. It is in an old mill along a river. The resort can tell you where it is. Be sure to eat at the Dillard House. It is on the other end of Dillard from the resort (on the left as you head south) and is not to be missed! They serve family style, at least 2 meats and plenty of veggies, and when a bowl gets empty, they refill it. If you leave hungry it's your own fault. Helen, Ga. is also close by and looks like a German village. If you head north from Dillard back into NC you will come to Franklin. There are several gem mines in Franklin where you can search for emeralds, rubies, and sapphires. I have several small gems that I found there. That area of north Georgia is very nice and we intend to return to Sky Valley in the future. I'm sure you will enjoy your visit."
